Florida Aquarium Releases Endangered Sea Turtles

The Florida Aquarium released two endangered juvenile green sea turtles at Anastasia State Park today. The green sea turtles, Fredrick and Talbot, returned to the sea following months of rehabilitation and care by The Florida Aquarium’s Animal Response Team, supported by Florida Blue.

Talbot was found in late May in the St. Augustine Inlet with a deep laceration on the back of his neck and was missing a front flipper. Fredrick was found stranded in the Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville. He was mildly debilitated and had a plastron fracture. He stranded mid-April and spent the first few weeks in rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Hospital at The University of Florida’s Whitney Lab. The Florida Aquarium received these two turtles on May 5th and began administering treatment for their injuries and health issues. Both sea turtles recovered wonderfully and after a little over two months of rehabilitation, were ready to go back into the sea.

Since The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center opened over a year ago, it has released 20 sea turtles. The Center has treated sea turtles with a variety of injuries including infection, laceration, amputations, cold stunning, and plastron fractures. The Aquarium takes great pride in treating these endangered animals, helping them get back into the ocean and onto a better life.

All care and turtle rehabilitation by The Florida Aquarium is done with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles and authorized under conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-18-172.
